The purpose of PERL(Power Electronics Research Laboratory, 전력전자연구실) is to promote the continuous progress of Korean industry through innovative research of power electronics. As per the large trend of energy transition toward renewables, our research is mainly focusing on power-system-associated issues from the perspective of power electronics. As the role of grid-connected inverter is supposed to be more active than before, inverter operations should be understood in the view point of interaction to the power system. It may be challenging to deal with this sort of issue because the knowledge of power electronics has to be combined with that of power system engineering. We are trying to find out helpful and beneficial solutions for inverter-based resources. In addition, the electric machine drives are one of our research subjects because large portions of loads and generators are based on electric machines.
The prime value of PERL is being practical. In other words, we prefer figuring out a feasible and simple way for a matter of concern. The effectiveness of our research will always be corroborated with experimental results from real hardware such as inverters, motors, and digital signal processors. Through the experiences of finding and verifying industry-helpful solutions, every member of PERL is expected to be a practical engineer after graduation. In particular, the usage of HILS(Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) is also getting significant in our research for the integrated verification of power electronics and power system engineering.
